Dear Colleagues:
Those of us fortunate enough to have union contracts have been able to maintain middle-class lifestyles, but in recent years, millions of other Americans have had to struggle to make ends meet. The income gap in the United States today is the greatest since 1928. Nearly 47 million Americans now have no health insurance.
It is more critical than ever to do what we can to aid those in our community who are literally one paycheck, or one serious illness, away from disaster. By supporting the United Way campaign, we’re helping to fund the vital services necessary to help people get on, and stay on, their feet.
CWA has proudly partnered with the United Way for many years. The United Way’s top labor service award is named after our founding president, Joe Beirne. Secretary-Treasurer Barbara Easterling sits on the United Way executive committee and governing board, and many CWA local officers and members volunteer to support the organization and its member groups in communities around the country.
I urge you to support the 2007 United Way fundraising campaign and to encourage your members to give generously this year to help maintain this network of services that provides a critical safety net for millions of Americans.
In Solidarity,

Larry Cohen President
